• The Stone: Two stones, one bracelet. Labradorite looks grey until it moves. Then it fires. Blues, greens, golds, and sometimes violet appear and vanish depending on the angle. This effect is called labradorescence. It is caused by light bouncing off microscopic internal layers inside the crystal. Ruby scores a 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond. The faceted ruby beads sit between the labradorite like sparks caught in smoke. Finished with a sterling silver clasp.

• History: Labradorite was first recorded in 1770 by missionaries on the Isle of Paul in Canada, though the Inuit people knew it long before. They called it a fire stone and believed it held the frozen light of the Aurora Borealis. According to Inuit legend, a warrior struck the coastal rocks with his spear and released the Northern Lights into the sky, but some of the light remained trapped in the stone forever. Ruby has been treasured for over 2,000 years. In ancient Sanskrit, it was called ratnaraj, king of precious stones. Burmese warriors embedded rubies into their skin before battle, believing the stones would make them invincible. It appears in the crown jewels of nearly every European monarchy.

• The Belief: In modern crystal practice, labradorite is a third eye chakra stone, said to strengthen intuition, transformation, and protection. In Vedic astrology, ruby is the gemstone of the Sun. It sits at the center of the Navaratna, an ancient nine-gem talisman believed to influence health and destiny. It has been used for thousands of years to strengthen the wearer’s inner fire.
