The Stone: Two different minerals, both blue, each for a different reason. Turquoise gets its color from copper. Apatite gets its blue from trace manganese inside its crystal structure. The turquoise beads are opaque and earthy. The apatite beads are deeper and more translucent. Set together between dark spacer discs, the two blues shift back and forth across the bracelet. No two beads are the exact same shade.

History: Turquoise has been mined for over 5,000 years, making it one of the oldest gemstones in human history. The Egyptians mined it in the Sinai Peninsula by 3000 BC. It was found on King Tutankhamun’s death mask. Persian warriors wore it on their turbans, believing the stone would change color to warn them of danger. The Aztecs set it into ceremonial masks. Native American tribes, including the Navajo and Apache, considered turquoise sacred and wore it as protection. The word itself comes from the French pierre turquoise, meaning Turkish stone, because the first turquoise reached Europe through Turkish trade routes. Apatite has a different story. German geologist Abraham Werner named it in 1786 from the Greek word apatao, meaning to deceive. This is because it was constantly mistaken for other, more valuable stones. What makes apatite fascinating is that it belongs to the same mineral group that forms human teeth and bones. You are wearing the same mineral your skeleton is made of.
